Pak “Sevadar” removed

The Deputy Attorney General (DAG) of Pakistan — who had performed ‘kar seva’ during a visit to India earlier this year — has been sacked, according to a media report. The Express Tribune on Thursday said Muhammad Khurshid Khan — who is based in Peshawar — had been replaced.

During a visit to India in March, Mr. Khan had polished shoes of devotees at gurudwaras. He was quoted in the media as saying he was performing ‘kar seva’ to “heal the wounds of minorities” in Pakistan. However, his decision to become a ‘sevadar’ drew criticism back home in general and his fraternity in particular.

Recently, the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) issued him a show cause notice for defaming Pakistan abroad. A rather belated move — coming as it did nearly three months after Mr. Khan’s India visit — the SCBA decision also came in for criticism from within the liberal community of the country.

The report said the Attorney-General Irfan Qadir sought to project it as a routine exercise.
